The Warwick Institute of Education is a major centre for educational studies located within one of the UK’s top research universities. With over 130 academic and support staff it is one of the UK’s leading centres for teacher education, education research and professional development.
The ethos of the Institute is created through a lively interaction of teaching and research together with a close partnership with local schools, early years settings, colleges and Local Education Authorities.
We offer:

  • a variety of Initial Teacher Education courses: Early Years, Primary and Secondary Post Graduate Certificate in Education, (flexible route also available on the Secondary PGCE) and the Graduate Teacher Programme;
  • a large and varied student body, with over 700 students on Initial Teacher Education courses and a further 300 following graduate, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or other undergraduate courses;
  • many specialist facilities including an ICT multimedia centre, literacy and numeracy centres and dedicated laboratories and drama/music studios;
  • top ratings from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted);
  • a 4B grade in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.

Many of our graduates return to the Institute to undertake postgraduate programmes or CPD activities. We offer a wide range of further training courses for teachers, including Taught Masters’ courses, research degrees, a taught doctorate (EdD), and other non-award bearing courses.
The Centre for English Language Teacher Education (CELTE) was established in 1983. It provides a comprehensive programme of research and development within the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and in the last sixteen years has built up an international reputation in this area.
The Centre offers a varied programme of teaching, research and consultancy activities. These are organised into four main groups:
1. Postgraduate training and research within the area of teacher education and trainer training;
2. Teaching English for academic and occupational purposes within the English Language Teaching Unit;
3. A rich programme of tailor-made short courses within the Short Course Unit;
4. Research-based testing and evaluation activities within the Testing and Evaluation Unit. In addition, the development of technology-assisted language learning is a major area of concern.
In all these activities, the Centre places great importance on the quality of the experience it provides to students, partners and clients alike. Over the years we have worked with people from over 90 different countries, including Britain, Western and Eastern Europe, Africa and the Arab World, South, South East, East and Central Asia, North, South and Central America. Our students have come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds and many now occupy senior positions throughout the world.
Our academic staff are experienced teachers and researchers with a record of publications in the field. They have experience of living and working overseas and are frequently invited to take on advisory tasks and consultancies.
